delectable, delicious and delightful!

I'M A HUNGRY DINOSAUR
by Janeen Brian, illustrated by Ann James - Penguin Books Australia, 2015
ages 1 to 6 years / funny

Every morning for the past week Ivy has stated that she needs, absolutely needs (!!!) cake for breakfast (and lunch and dinner and pretty much all day).

We’re working on the concept that cake is an occasional treat and not a major food group, it’s slow going!

But the upside is that we're having great fun reading I’m A Hungry Dinosaur because she's really relating to it.

This is a lively story about a VERY hungry dinosaur with a monstrous appetite for cake.

The little dinosaur is going to "shake and stir and mix and beat and make a cake that’s yum."

It’s great fun to follow the dinosaur as he/she explains the process of making a cake, which happens to be a very messy process involving hands right in the pan, licking everything you can and sprinkling the icing with exuberance.

The sentences are nicely descriptive with key words repeated in bold colourful print that's eye-catching and great for word recognition. And the fun rhyming makes it a wonderful ‘read out loud’ book.

The illustrations are simple and bright. In the original artwork, Anne James even used real ingredients like flour, cocoa and sprinkles to get that really-messy-baking feel!

It’s a delightful book that captures the sheer joy of baking (and eating) as a whole body experience. In the end the cake is so delicious that the little dinosaur couldn't stop at just one slice… or even one whole cake! It tasted so good that they:

"grab their bowl and spoon and make another cake!"

It’s a great book for any dinosaur lover, cake lover or mess lover!
